7000 members of the Masol Pokot tribe live in a 35-mile square area called Tikeet. There is an infant mortality rate of 67% and a 15% chance of children reaching the age of 5. Families live in ‘bandas’, mud and straw huts with no electricity or running water.
There is no local medical care and many children die of simple illnesses like diarrhoea whilst being carried by their mothers on a 30-mile trek to find treatment.
Once built, the Medical Centre will have a special baby unit with a state registered nurse practitioner based there.
